Friday Night – Food and Fun
On Friday evening, we invited a few of the other volunteers and missionaries over for supper and games. Ric made spaghetti bolognese, and I made pavlova. I also attempted banana bread… which didn’t rise, but still tasted okay!
We shared a meal, swapped stories, and played Skyjo. It was such a fun, relaxed evening and a lovely way to build community.

Saturday – A House Full of Kids
On Saturday, I decided to invite any kids who wanted to come over and do diamond art. I had brought some keychains and stickers, not quite knowing what to expect.
In the end, eleven kids turned up! Some of the younger ones came with their parents, and the house was soon full of chatter, laughter, and concentration as everyone worked on their creations.
It was such a fun afternoon. By 5:30, there were still four kids left—we eventually had to send them home! Before they left, we gave them chocolate Easter eggs and squash, which was very well received.

More Games to End the Day
After supper, Oriella—a volunteer from Chile—called by, keen to play games. We introduced her to Skip-Bo and Yahtzee, which made for another fun and laughter-filled evening.
It really was one of those days that felt full from beginning to end.

Sunday – Church and a Trip to Mount Hagen
On Sunday, we went to church with Kendal, Josh, and their lovely family. The church was about an hour’s drive away, partway to Mount Hagen.
Josh was preaching, and Ric even performed a little skit, which added a lighthearted touch to the service.
Afterwards, we headed into Mount Hagen for lunch—I had butter chicken—and took the opportunity to pick up a few groceries and a new shirt for Ric.

A Quiet End to a Full Weekend
We had just arrived home when one of the girls from the previous day came back—with a friend who had missed out on the diamond art. Of course, they were very welcome, and spent a few happy hours crafting together.
I decided to try making banana bread again… unfortunately, this one wasn’t any better than the first!
Ric headed off for pickleball, while I enjoyed a quieter evening watching The Great British Bake Off.
Closing Reflection
It was such a life-giving weekend—full of laughter, hospitality, and connection. In the midst of the challenges of hospital life, these moments of joy and community feel especially precious.
Thank you for taking the time to blog your trip to PNG—it really gives us a glimpse into your world there.
