Today was a great day. I’m not saying I havent enjoyed the other days – Tuesdays are always interesting seeing the paediatric patients, but today I felt was special. The card and chocolate from Ric were nice, and my presentation on the difference between Osteoarthritis and Rheumatoid arthritis was well received. At the end of the lecture I was given a piece of paper with “my verse” on it – extra special. – Trust in The Lord with all your heart.

Next was clinic. I didn’t see that many patients but the one’s I saw were interesting. My first patient came in with a cough for 6 months with night sweats. I sent him for a CXR – here is the result. Presumed TB. I sent him for a Gene expert sputum test and will know the result monday. The doctors woud have treated him straight away but he wanted to wait until he had the results.

The next patient looked sick – after some tests I found he had a hemaglobin of 5.5 (less than 1/2 of normal. No wonder he complained of dizziness.

Another patient was someone I had seen last week and asked to go for an MRI. (she had pain in her back with loss of sensation of her lower legs progressively and loss of bowel function) Her MRI came back with TB of the spine.

I also saw a few back pains gynae issues etc but was such an interesting day. I think I will hang out at the TB clinic tomorrow and learn how they do things.

Ric also had a good day. The power supplying the hospital failed due to some burnt wires. It took six hours for the power company to show up. Ric had to hand pump the gasoline into a 45 gallon tank for the generator. All but critical areas of the hospital were without electricity.

Everything here is manual labour at a small price. Here are men breaking rocks as the foundation for paving stones.
