We had a great flight to Kenya via Amsterdam. On the first flight we had 4 seats to ourselves – which meant I had 3 seats and was able to sleep whilst Ric had one seat. (his idea).

Amsterdam airport was so cool. There was a random guy playing the piano like it was just a regular cafe and then we had Poffertjes – Dutch Mini Pancakes – sitting in a teacup! It certainly felt like we were in Amsterdam – even though we were only in the airport.

On the flight from Amsterdam to Nairobi I was looking at the flight map to see how much time we had left. It said we were going to Jeddah!!

Shortly after the Captain came on the intercom to say there was a medical emergency and we were going to stop in Saudi Arabia so as the person with heart issues could get medical attention. ( they didnt call for a doctor but there was one sitting near the person ) Once the medics came on board and deplaned the patient we took off immediately, so were only 2 hours delayed – getting into Nairobi at midnight. I had been so worried about our bags – being questioned about the contents and them being searched …but we just had to scan our hand bags and no one asked us anything. (answer to prayer!)

After 5 hours of sleep we drove to Maua hospital. Our driver Kenneth was great – stopping at a mall where we were able to get a sim card and some groceries. The drive which was supposed to take 5 1/2 hours was so interesting. Paddy fields galore with rice being dried at the side of the road. Pineaple plantations, and in every town crazy motorcyclists.

Arriving in Maua the streets were crowded and the traffic stopped. We could see the hospital – but traffic was at a standstill and there were people everywhere. Then we saw helicopters flying overhead – the president of the country had been visiting Maua. It was chaotic with so many people. We were delayed for over an hour.

Eventually we were able to drive to the hospital. At the hospital compound we have a 3 bedroom house – we get to stay in the large room with onsuite and apparently another doctor is coming for 3 weeks and will stay in another bedroom.

Isabelle had a lovely meal on the table for us. The house is like it was from the 70’s with a dining/kitchen little hutch (passthrough). We are both so tired and excited for bed.
